On Alexander-Conway Polynomials for Virtual Knots and Links

A polynomial invariant of virtual links, arising from an invariant of links in thickened surfaces introduced by Jaeger, Kauffman, and Saleur, is defined and its properties are investigated. Examples are given that the invariant can detect chirality and even non-invertibility of virtual knots and links. Furthermore, it is shown that the polynomial satisfies a Conway-type skein relation – in cont...

On Alexander-conway Polynomials for Virtual Knots and Links

A polynomial invariant of virtual links, arising from an invariant of links in thickened surfaces introduced by Jaeger, Kauuman, and Saleur, is deened and its properties are investigated. Examples are given that the invariant can detect chirality and even non-invertibility of virtual knots and links. Furthermore, it is shown that the polynomial satisses a Conway-type skein relation { in contras...

Vassiliev invariants and the cubical knot complex Ilya Kofman

We construct a cubical CW-complex CK(M3) whose rational cohomology algebra contains Vassiliev invariants of knots in the 3-manifold M3. We construct CK(R3) by attaching cells to CK(R3) for every degenerate 1-singular and 2-singular knot, and we show that π1(CK(R 3)) = 1 and π2(CK(R 3)) = Z. We give conditions for Vassiliev invariants to be nontrivial in cohomology. In particular, for R3 we show...

A New Finite Element Formulation for Buckling and Free Vibration Analysis of Timoshenko Beams on Variable Elastic Foundation

In this study, the buckling and free vibration of Timoshenko beams resting on variable elastic foundation analyzed by means of a new finite element formulation. The Winkler model has been applied for elastic foundation. A two-node element with four degrees of freedom is suggested for finite element formulation. Displacement and rotational fields are approximated by cubic and quadratic polynomia...

Numerical Formulation on Crack Closing Effect In Buckling Analysis of Edge-Cracked Columns

In this paper, buckling of simply supported column with an edge crack is investigated numerically and analytically. Four different scenarios of damage severities are applied to a column, open crack assumption and the effect of closing crack in stability of the column which depends on position and size of cracks, are numerically compared. Crack surfaces contact is modeled with GAP element using ...
